Small Print

To be eligible to enter the Undergraduate competition you must be currently studying on a degree course or equivalent, in the UK or overseas. The course does not have to be specific to photography.

Students studying for level 4 & 5 qualifications equivalent to undergraduate study may also apply.

To be eligible to enter the Graduate competition you must have graduated within five years of the current academic year (i.e. you must have graduated in or since 2012). The Graduate competition is also open to anyone currently studying an MA course, Postgraduate course, or equivalent, in the UK or overseas. The course does not have to be specific to photography.

Entries from photographers living outside the UK are welcome, however the winner must meet the costs for travel and accommodation if they wish to oversee the printing, hanging and opening of the exhibition.

The images can be shot in any format, using any camera model, on film or digital. If you are entering a series of images, please indicate the viewing order, if appropriate.

~

Each image can be a maximum of 5MB in size. All images must be submitted as JPEG files – any files submitted in any other format (including TIFF, PDF, PSD etc) will be discarded.

~

The series must be an interconnected body of work, up to a maximum of 20 images.

~

There are no restrictions on when the submitted images were taken.

~

Your statement must be under 1500 characters in length (approximately 250 words) and written in English.

Once your images and statement have been uploaded to the system you will see an option to Submit your entry. Once submitted your entry cannot be altered. Only submitted entries will be viewed by the judges.

The final extended deadline is Monday 15 May 2017 at 6pm (BST). Judging will take place shortly after the deadline. The winners must be available to supply images promptly for exhibition printing, and for interview by telephone or in person. Digital files of the winning images will be created for press and publicity purposes.

Successful entries will be exhibited at a BJP Breakthrough Awards Showcase from Friday 23rd June – Monday 3rd July 2017. The exhibition will take place at Old Truman Brewery in east London, as part of the Free Range graduate shows. There will be an evening launch event on Thursday 22nd June 2017.

Photographers must be available to discuss their prints with Metro Imaging. Photographers may select prints that fit Metro Imaging’s production budget, or go over budget and supplement the difference.

Photographers may keep both the prints after the exhibition, but must make arrangements for, and meet the costs of, collecting them.

~

The winners will be interviewed and published through BJP’s online editorial and social media channels as well as appearing in print as part of a special edition newspaper being printed for all attendees of Breakthrough, and subsequently promoted by BJP in a digital format.

BJP, Free Range and Metro Imaging cannot be responsible for any loss or damage to submitted work.

BJP, Free Range, and Metro Imaging reserve the right to display, reproduce and publish in any media, any entry, without payment, for the sole purpose of BJP Breakthrough – this year and in future – and its promotion and publicity. No copyright is transferred to the BJP, Free Range, or Metro Imaging in respect of any works entered or accepted. Each entrant will be deemed to warrant they own the entire copyright for the work or that they have permission from the licensee and/or copyright owner/s for the uses.

All relevant clearances and/or model releases must have been obtained for the use of the photographs for publication and exhibition.

You will be asked to pay for your entry by Credit Card. All payments are handled securely by our payment partner Stripe. After payment, you will receive an email containing a personal upload URL where you may submit your images and statement.
